The meaning of litany
The Mariana Lethanias in Chinese are a complete expression of the Marian theology of the Catholic Church. Each invocation contains an aspect of the dignity and mission of the Virgin Mary, from her divine motherhood to her role as an intercessor and protector of the Church.
The invocation of the Church in China (Our Lady of China) was added as an expression of the devotion of the Chinese people to the Virgin Mary. This invocation is particularly significant because it recognizes the Virgin Mary as the mother and protector of the Chinese people.
The use of litany in China
The Mariana Lethanias are praying in China during liturgical celebrations, especially at the Marian parties and on pilgrimages. The Chinese parishes recite them at the end of the Mass, especially during the months of May and October.
During the persecution, the litanies were secretly prayed by the clandestine Catholics. The litany of the titles of the Virgin Mary was a source of comfort and spiritual strength in the midst of suffering.
The complete litany
The complete litany in Mandarin includes more than 50 invocation, each of which is an expression of the faith of the Church in the Virgin Mary. The litany concludes with the invocation "Pity of the world," followed by the final prayer.
