Our Lady of Harissa: Queen of Lebanon
Kingsa, Líbano
The most important Marian sanctuary in Lebanon, dedicated to the Virgin Mary.
In Harissa, on a hill overlooking the Mediterranean, the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lebanon rises. The statue of the Virgin Mary, 8.5 meters high, was inaugurated in 1908.
History of the sanctuary
The sanctuary was built by the Maronites, an eastern Catholic church that venerated the Virgin Mary as her patron. The statue of Harissa is a symbol of Lebanon and the Maronite faith.
Cada año, miles de peregrinos suben a Harissa para venerar a la Virgen. El Papa Juan Pablo II visitó Harissa en 1997 y la nombró «Reina del Líbano».
The Monasteries of Mount Lebanon
In the mountains of Lebanon, the Maronite monasteries have venerated the Virgin Mary since the V. century St. Charbel, the most popular saint in Lebanon, was a Maronite monk who lived in the monastery of Annaya.
