Church of the Annunciation of Canouan
On the small island of Canouan, in the southern Grenadines, the registered Catholic church is dedicated to the Annunciation, the moment when the angel Gabriel announced to Mary the incarnation of the Lord. It belongs to the diocese of Kingstown, which covers the whole nation of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.
🌹 Wonders and anecdotes
- The church of Canouan appears in the Catholic records under the title of the Annunciation: on an island of just a few kilometers, faith is welcomed to the "make" of Mary.
- The diocesan memory recalls that in 1971 the missionary destined for the southern Grenadines went through the islands by boat: Mass at seven in the morning in Canouan, at nine and a half in Mayreau and at eleven in Union Island, all in the same morning.
- The diocese of Kingstown was erected on 23 October 1989 by John Paul II, and its cathedral is that of the Assumption in Kingstown: the Catholic life of Canouan is thus linked to a Marian heart.
- Its closest neighbor is also Marian: the church of the Immaculate Conception of the island of Mayreau, about ten kilometres by sea, with which it forms a small rosary of temples between islands.
La Anunciación
In Canouan, the Church of the Annunciation keeps the Catholic faith of the South Grenadines, served for decades by missionaries from island to island. Under the angel's announcement to Mary, this small island community lives together with the Cathedral of the Assumption of Kingstown.
"Our Lady of the Annunciation, teach us to answer like You:" Be done in me according to your word. "
