Cathedral of Saint Peter the Apostle of Gizo

In Gizo, the second town of the Solomon Islands, the Cathedral of St. Peter the Apostle is the mother church of the diocese of Gizo, which embraces the western provinces, Choiseul and Elizabeth. Inaugurated and blessed on June 18, 1964 by Bishop E. J. Crawford, it is one of the three Catholic cathedrals in the country.

🌹 Wonders and anecdotes

  • The diocese was born as an apostolic vicariate in 1959 and was raised to the diocese in 1966 by Pope Paul VI, leaving the archdiocese of Honiara as a suffranea.
  • The earthquake and tsunami of April 2007 damaged the temple; the community did not surrender and remodeled it and expanded it on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of its foundation.
