🌹 Wonders and anecdotes
- The Catholic presence in Lifuka cost tears: on July 7, 1858, the Marist parents Calinon and Guitta, with the visitor General Victor Poupinel, arrived on the island and were denied a place to settle; the 1855 religious equality convention had to be invoked so that the mission could take root.
- The temple draws attention to its unique architecture in conical forms, unmistakable among the Pacific churches, and remains a living parish where the faithful go to Mass in the traditional Tongan dress.
- The parish belongs to the diocese of Tonga, whose seat is the Cathedral of Santa Maria Immaculate (Malia Tupu Imakulata) in Tongatapu: even here, the community lives under a diocesan Marian amparo.
- Catholics are a minority in the kingdom of Tonga - about 14-16% of the population - and communities like Pangai guard the faith with the perseverance inherited from the Marist missionaries.
In Jesus, teach us that only God is enough, also in the most distant islands.
