Our Lady of the Miracles of Motta di Livenza

Marian devotion

Where is he?

The Basilica-Sanctuary of Madonna dei Miracoli is in Motta di Livenza, province of Treviso (Veneto, Italy). The building is attended by the Franciscans and retains the memory of the place of the alleged apparition.

Documented history

The sanctuary places the story on March 9, 1510 and states that Giovanni Cigana, an old peasant, communicated the experience. The report consulted contains a canonical process opened in May 1510. The sources consulted do not agree on the year of consecration of the church - one indicates 1513 and another 1548 - so the discrepancy is recorded.

Tradition

Tradition tells that the Virgin appeared to Giovanni Cigana after she prayed to a small prayer. He would have asked for three Saturdays of fasting, penance and the construction of a church.

Legend

There is no separate legend clearly differentiated from the traditional account of the apparition.

Ecclesial State

Adopted in the historical sense. The institutional history of the sanctuary refers to a canonical process of May 1510 that recognized the veracity of the apparition. This fact sheet retains the historical accuracy of the data; it does not intend to turn the devotional account into a new statement or to attribute to it a decree whose full text is not reproduced in the consulted source.

Anecdotes and stories

The sanctuary refers that Giovanni Cigana had been praying the Rosary daily to the small oratorio for twenty years. Tradition presents this perseverant prayer as the immediate context of the story.

Prayer

Madonna dei Miracoli, pray for those who persevere in prayer and for those who need to return to God. He intercedes before Jesus Christ that we may receive a humble, penitent and merciful heart. Amen.

Documented extension

The institutional account of the Sanctuary-Basilica places the experience of Giovanni Cigana on March 9, 1510. The source describes it as an old peasant who had been praying the Rosary for twenty years and who stopped before a small Chapter of the Virgin on the road between Motta, Oderzo and Reigole. He adds that that morning he prayed seven Fathers and seven Avemarias before continuing his way. These details belong to the historical and devotional narrative of the sanctuary.

In that same narrative, the message attributed to Our Lady asks for three Saturdays of fasting for Cigana, her family and the population, together with penance, and requests that a church be built in the place. The website of the sanctuary states that many pilgrims soon came, that the present basilica was raised between 1510 and 1514 and that the Franciscans served there continuously since 8 April 1510. The fact sheet retains the difference between these institutional data and the independent historical demonstration of the phenomenon.

The chapel of the apparition retains, according to the sanctuary, the image venerated in a crypt under the altar. The crown of the image was solemnly placed on 18 September 1859 by the pontifical legacy Monsignor M. Bellati, on behalf of Pius IX, and the image is carried in procession through the streets of Motta every twenty-five years, as well as other exceptional occasions. These are data of veneration and history of the sanctuary; there is no other supernatural statement here than that already documented and defined in the tab.
