Penang Assumption Church (George Town)
The Church of the Assumption of George Town is the oldest Catholic church in Penang and one of the oldest in Malaysia: it was born in 1786, when Bishop Garnault and the first Catholic community arrived from Kedah landed on the island on the eve of the Feast of the Assumption, and in their honor they dedicated their first wooden chapel to this mystery.
🌹 Wonders and anecdotes
- His name was born from a providential date: the first Catholics of Penang arrived on the island on the eve of the Assumption of 1786 and called their humble temple of wood Church of the Assumption.
- The current building of Farquhar Street held its first mass in 1861; it was expanded with two wings in 1928 and fully restored in 2016-2018.
- In 1955 he was raised to the cathedral of the new diocese of Penang; in 2003 the title of the Church of the Holy Spirit was passed to the church of the Holy Spirit.
- It conserves a 1914 tube organ that continues to sound at Sunday Mass, rises in the area declared World Heritage by UNESCO and was designated a parish church of the diocese for the Jubilee 2025.

It is the cradle of Catholicism in Penang: the community that founded it in 1786 put the island under the protection of the Virgin Asunta from the first day. Today it remains a living memory of the faith of the first Catholics and the Jubilee temple of the diocese.
