Marian devotion
Mare de Déu de la Bonanova
Santuary of Palma (Mallorca)
On a hill above Palma Bay, the Bonanova shrine - whose name evokes the "good news" of the Gospel - welcomes the Marian devotion of the neighborhood that bears its name.
Origin and history
The origin of the sanctuary dates back to a 15th century oratory: in 1472 a cleric founded a oratory dedicated to Saint Anthony and the Virgin. In the late 17th century, in 1694, he was converted into Marian sanctuary, becoming the Sanctuary of Bonanova. The present church was built at the end of the 18th century, replacing the old oratory.
The name "Bonanova" is devotionally associated with the "good news" evangelical. It is a Marian sanctuary of the neighborhood, in a high and residential environment, where the Mare de Déu de la Bonanova is venerated as a protective mother of the neighbors; its goigs witness an ancient and rooted popular devotion. Today it is integrated into the pastoral community of Gènova i Bonanova.
Date of the feast, canonical patronage and canonical coronation: not recorded in the sources.
