Mare de Déu de la Murta
Old Jerome monastery of the Murta valley (Alzira, Valencia)
In the back valley of the Murta, next to Alzira, the ruins of a famous Jerome monastery keep the memory of the Mare de Déu de la Murta, a devotion linked to one of the most beautiful parts of the Bank.
Origin and history
The advocation is linked to the ancient Jerome monastery of Our Lady of the Murta, founded in the Middle Ages in a wooded valley of the term Alzira, which was an important spiritual and artistic center of the Júcar Bank until the decriminalization. Today its ruins are preserved in a protected natural area.
The devotion to the Mare de Déu de la Murta continues to be linked to the monastery and its surroundings, with roseries to the valley. The sources do not detail a precise chronology of the origin of the image.
Formal patronage, own party and canonical coronation: they are not safely recorded in the sources.
