Mare de Déu de la Serra
Montblanc Patron (Tarragona)
In the upper part of Montblanc, a Gothic sanctuary of the 13th century - the old closing convent - welcomes the Mare de Déu de la Serra, patron of the villa, where every first Saturday of the month the Holy Rosary is prayed.
Origin and history
The shrine and convent of the Serra dates back to the 13th century, with Gothic enlargements in the 14th century. For centuries it was a closing convent - of clarisas until November 2008 - made up of the monastery, the sanctuary and the old host. It is a Gothic building of the XIII-XV centuries, protected as Cultural Good of Local Interest, now integrated into the parish unit of Montblanc.
The Mare de Déu de la Serra is venerated as patron of Montblanc, with the Festes de la Serra. His devotion is articulated today around prayer: every first Saturday of the month is celebrated the prayer of the Holy Rosary and the Mass at 10: 00, and the sanctuary offers spiritual reception and accompaniment between weeks.
Main liturgical date and canonical coronation: are not safely recorded in the sources.
