Patrona de Alcúdia (Mallorca)

In the Puig de la Victòria, located in the bays of Alcúdia and Pollença, a fortified hermitage has kept the Mare de Déu de la Victòria, "marededéu trobada" and patron of Alcúdia since 1644.

Origin and history

The tradition presents it as a "marededéu trobada" (Virgin found): around 1300, a pastor - Joan Boi - would have heard the angels sing and found the image among the bushes, in the area of Ses Tres Creus; taken to Alcúdia, the image disappeared and returned to the place of the find. The documented history links the origin to the erectic life of the area: in 1395 there lived the erect Arnau Got, and in 1403 Fra Diego García received permission to celebrate Mass - the image was then known as "Nostra Dona de fra Diego." In the 16th century the Carmelites were linked.

In the context of the Germanies and the corsary threats, the image was invoked as a protector of the city, consolidating the title "of the Victòria." In 1643 the jurors of Alcúdia set their feast on July 2, and in 1644 they elected her patron of the city. The current building, a solid, defensive-looking hermitage, was blessed in 1704. His devotion is particularly linked to the marine environment of the Cap del Pinar.
