Virgen del Lidón (Mare de Déu del Lledó)

Marian title of Castellón de la Plana (Comunitat Valenciana)

The main patron of Castellón, declared by Pius XI on November 8, 1922. The image is a figure of alabaster of 7 × 3 cm, of likely origin prior to the 14th century, contained in a space- relicary of 1638. According to the legend (documented from 1366-1379), the Perot of Granyana found it under a stone next to the roots of an almez (lled) when plowing its field; the image miraculously returned to the place of the find when they tried to take it to the church. Canonically crowned on 4 May 1924 by Archbishop Vidal i Barraquer; cut in 1974 and 1999. Pope John Paul II raised the sanctuary to the Minor Basilica on March 18, 1983.
