Mare de Déu de Monti-sion
Porreres Sanctuary (Mallorca)
On the hill of Monti-sion, over Porreres, a 14th-century sanctuary that was a house of study keeps one of the most rooted Marian devotions of rural Majorca.
Origin and history
The sanctuary rises at the top of the Puig de Monti@-@ sion, about 250 meters, at the end of Porreres. Its origin dates back to the 14th century, with the construction of a religious house that evolved to sanctuary with chapel and cloister; over the centuries it integrated a classroom of grammar studies and was the subject of successive enlargements and restorations. The access road was opened by the inhabitants of Porreres themselves, a sign of their connection to the sanctuary.
For centuries it has been a place of pilgrimage and religious concentration for the faithful of Porreres and all of Mallorca, especially in the Marian festivities. The popular goigs witness a well-established cult since ancient times. His party is held on the second Sunday of May, with processions and climb to the Puig.
Formal canonical patronage and canonical coronation: not recorded in the sources.
