Mare de Déu del Camí
Patrona de Cambrils (Tarragona)
Next to the old Camí Reial, on Via Augusta, the sanctuary-hermitage of the Mare de Déu del Camí guards the patron of Cambrils, invoked for eight centuries by the sailors and the people of the sea.
Origin and history
The first documentary reference of the sanctuary dates from 1214, as the ancient parish church of Cambrils. The present Baroque-style temple was rebuilt from 1704- 1705 thanks to the legacy of canon Andreu Foix and the participation of the people. Next to the church is the Tower of l'Ermita, medieval tower of surveillance against pirates, and the whole is located next to the layout of the old Camí Reial / Via Augusta, which explains the title "del Camí."
The Mare de Déu del Camí has been a patron of Cambrils for some eight hundred years, with special patronage over the sailors and the people of the sea, who invoke it in the face of turbulence, and as an intercessor by the rain. His party is on September 8, around the Major Festa del Camí.
