Marian devotion
Mare de Déu del Lluch
Patrona de Alzira (Valencia)
On a mountain above Alzira, a hermit-sanctuary guards the Mare de Déu del Lluch, the patron of the city, to which the alcireños go up in Rome every fall.
Origin and history
The Mare de Déu del Lluch is the patron of Alzira, venerated in a hermit-sanctuary located on the mountain that dominates the city, center of local Marian devotion. Devotion also gives name to a neighborhood of the city.
Its most characteristic feature is the pilgrimage to the shrine of the mountain, at the end of September, in which the city goes up to honor its patron. The accessible sources do not detail a precise chronology of the origin of the cult.
Documented origin and canonical coronation: are not safely recorded in the sources.
