Mare de Déu del Miracle
Patrona de Cocentaina · the "Miracle of tears" (Alicante)
Patrona de Cocentaina, the Mare de Déu del Miracle owes its name to the "Miracle of tears" of 1520, when, according to tradition, the image cried in the chapel of the Condal Palace.
Origin and history
The devotion is born from the so-called "Miracle of tears": in 1520 the tradition places the prodigy of the image of the Virgin, then in the chapel of San Antonio Abad of the Condal Palace of Cocentaina, which would have shed tears. From this fact the Mare de Déu del Miracle, patron of the villa, now venerated in its Royal Sanctuary, takes its name.
His main party, on April 19, commemorates the miracle and is the great day of Cocentaina, with great popular participation. The account of the prodigy belongs to the field of devotional tradition.
Canonical coronation: there is no safety in the sources.
