Marian devotion
Mare de Déu del Puig
Santuario del Puig de María · Pollença (Mallorca)
On the top of the Puig de Maria, on Pollença, an ancient Monastery-sanctuary born as a vote before the black plague receives every Easter Monday the penitential rise of all the people.
Origin and history
The Puig de María shrine, to the south-east of Pollença, has its origin in the 14th century: a local source places the beginning of the construction in 1348, as a vote to the Virgin in view of the arrival of the black plague in Mallorca that same year. Around 1461, popular devotion allowed the monastery to be expanded, which maintained a monastic community and, subsequently, the function of religious host.
It is a sanctuary of penitential and Marian ascent, closely linked to the local devotion of Pollença, with annual procession to the Puig on Easter Monday, at the "Festa del Puig." Today it remains a place of pilgrimage and host. The accessible sources do not collect formal patronage or canonical coronation.
Formal patronage and canonical coronation: not found in the sources.
