Virgin of Grace

Marian title of Cinctorres (Comunitat Valenciana)

In 1589 there was already a primitive hermitage in the place, built to guard an image of the Virgin of Grace, a gift from the Bishop of Tortosa Gaspar Punter to the population. The primitive hermitage was demolished in 1868; the present one was projected by the architect Manuel Montesinos (first stone: 17 March 1868; works completed in 1875), about 2 km north-west of the town. The original image of alabaster was destroyed in the Civil War; the current replica, of the sculptor Josep Aiza, is in an glazed shrimp in the form of a circular temple.
