Marian devotion
Where is he?
The Memorial of the Conversion of St. Paul is located in the Al-Tabbaleh district of Damascus, Syria, in the custody of the Custody of the Holy Land. The point of the map is offered with precise location: the sources confirm the memorial and its area, but do not allow to set here a verified building coordinate without risk of confusing it with other gradual places in Damascus.
Documented history
The Custody documents a Franciscan chapel in Al-Tabbaleh since 1925. In 1971, a memorial dedicated to St. Paul was opened at the initiative of Pope Paul VI. The Franciscan presence and the construction of the memorial belong to the modern history of the sanctuary; they are not an affirmation that archaeology has identified the exact point of the experience narrated in the Acts.
The memorial is part of the network of Christian places in Damascus and keeps the memory of the conversion of the apostle. The city also retains other traditional gradual locations. This file is limited to the shrine of Al-Tabbaleh and does not fuse its history with the House of Saint Ananias, with Bab Kisan or with the traditional church of Kaukab: they are different places and the sources do not allow to treat them as a single place.
Biblical history and tradition
The accounts of the Acts of the Apostles tell us that Saul was going to Damascus when he had an experience that transformed his life and then a disciple named Ananias came to him. The biblical text places the event near Damascus, but does not describe a topographic coordinate to identify the current memorial building. The Christian tradition of Al-Tabbaleh receives that memory and expresses it through a place of prayer.
Legend and limits of the record
There is no independent legend to add. There is also no archaeological declaration that Al-Tabbaleh is the exact point of conversion. Paul's conversion belongs to the biblical witness; the location of the memorial in Damascus and its Franciscan history belong to the documented history of the sanctuary; the precise topographic link remains a tradition.
Ecclesial State
The memorial is a Catholic sanctuary of the Custody of the Holy Land and maintains public veneration. Indicated permitted veneration in the sense that there is a Catholic place of prayer and pilgrimage. This condition is not presented as an approval of an exact archaeological location or as a new private revelation.
Anecdotes and stories
The creation of the memorial on the initiative of Paul VI in 1971 linked a contemporary work of the Custody to an apostolic memory of the early Christian times. The 1925 chapel and the later memorial show how a Christian community has preserved that memory in modern Damascus. No testimonies of apparitions, miracles or relics are added because they are not recorded in the sources used for this tab.
Prayer
St. Paul, an apostle of Christ, pray for those who need conversion, reconciliation and courage to begin again. Holy Mary, Mother of the Church, intercedes for the Christian community of Damascus and for all who seek God. May our prayer not remain in place, but lead us to live the Gospel. Amen.
