Marian devotion
Guadalupe and the Mexican liturgical calendar
Mexico
December 12 is a feast of precept in Mexico by the Virgin of Guadalupe.
In Mexico, December 12 is a feast of precept, just like Christmas and Holy Week. It is the only Marian advocation that has this privilege in the Mexican liturgical calendar.
The Mexican government declared December 12 as a holiday in 1828, and has never been withdrawn, although there were attempts during the liberal period.
Mexicans work that day, but schools and public offices close.
