Guadalupe and the new Christians
Mexico City
The Virgin of Guadalupe was the first symbol of unity between indigenous and Spanish.
In the 16th century, Mexico was divided between indigenous and Spanish. The Virgin of Guadalupe was the first symbol that united both peoples under the same faith.
The indigenous people recognized her as their own because she had brown skin. The Spaniards accepted her because she was the Virgin. Thus, Guadalupe became the mother of a mestizo people.
El Papa Francisco dijo: «Guadalupe es el rostro mestizo de la Iglesia en América.»
