Marian devotion
Guadalupe and the first diocese of America
Mexico City
The first diocese of America was founded in honor of Guadalupe.
The Diocese of Mexico, founded in 1530, was the first diocese of America. It was dedicated to the Virgin of Guadalupe, making it the first official Marian advocation on the continent.
Since then, all the dioceses of Latin America have had Guadalupe as a spiritual reference.
Pope July III officially recognized the devotion to Guadalupe in 1555.
