Guadalupe and the Independence of Mexico
Mexico City
The first banner of independence was the image of the Virgin.
On September 16, 1810, Miguel Hidalgo left Dolores with an army of indigenous and mestizos. He was wearing a banner with the image of the Virgin of Guadalupe. It was the only symbol that could bring everyone together.
Morelos, another hero of independence, asked to be taken to Guadalupe before he was executed. When he arrived, he kneeled before the Virgin and cried.
Guadalupe Victoria, Mexico's first president, changed his name in gratitude to the Virgin for the victory she gave her in the war.
