Marian devotion
Guadalupe and the Pacific fishermen
Mazatlán, Sinaloa
The fishermen of Mazatlán venerate Guadalupe as the protector of the sea.
In Mazatlán, Pacific fishermen carry an image of Our Lady of Guadalupe on their boats. Before setting sail, they pray to her for protection from storms.
Tradition tells that the Virgin of Guadalupe appeared over the waters of the Pacific to guide some fishermen who had become lost. The fishermen called her "The Star of the Pacific."
Every December 12th, fishermen organize a floating procession through the bay of Mazatlán.
