Marian devotion
Guadalupe and Mexican soldiers
Mexico City
Mexican soldiers take Guadalupe as their protector.
In the Mexican army, it is a tradition for each soldier to carry a small image of Guadalupe. Before every battle, the soldiers pray to her.
The tradition tells that the Virgin of Guadalupe protected the Mexican soldiers in the Battle of Puebla (1862), where they defeated the French even though they were less.
General Porfirio Díaz, before each battle, kneeled before a picture of Guadalupe and asked for his victory.
