In the Chihuahua mountains, the indigenous pastors (raramuri) venerate San Juan de los Lagos. They take her in procession on the mountain roads.
Tradition tells that the Virgin of St. John protects the shepherds from wolves and storms. The shepherds pray to him before going out to pasture.
Every 2 February, the shepherds go up the mountain with their flocks to venerate the Virgin.
St. John of the Lakes protects the pastors of the northern mountains.
