The Virgin of the Candelaria of Tlaxcala
Tlaxcala, Mexico
The first Marian image that came to America was to Tlaxcala.
In 1526, the Franciscans brought the image of the Virgin of Candelaria to Tlaxcala. It was the first Marian image to come to the American continent.
The Tlaxcaltecs adopted her as their patron and took her in procession throughout the valley. The image traveled with the conquerors to other places in Mexico.
