The image of Guadalupe shows a Virgin with brown skin, dark eyes and mixed features. She's not a European Virgin, she's a Mexican Virgin.
When the indigenous people saw the image, they recognized it as their own. She was not the Virgin of the Spaniards, she was the Virgin of them. That's why they loved her so much.
