The Virgin of the Soledad of Oaxaca
Oaxaca, Mexico
The Virgin of Soledad was hidden during the conquest and found centuries later.
During the Spanish conquest, the indigenous people of Oaxaca hid an image of the Virgin in a cave so that the Spaniards would not destroy it. The image remained there for centuries.
When it was found, the image was perfect, as if time had not touched it. The Oaxaqueans venerate her as the mother who shared the solitude of their own.
Every December 18th, thousands of people from Oaxaca celebrate the festival of Solitude with processions and Zapotec songs.
