Marian devotion
Our Lady of Solitude in Mexico
Oaxaca, Mexico
The Virgin of Solitude is the patron saint of Oaxaca and one of the most beloved Marian devotions.
In Oaxaca, the Virgin of Solitude was hidden during the conquest to prevent the Spanish from destroying it. The indigenous people kept it in a cave for centuries.
When it was found, the image was perfect. The people of Oaxaca venerate it as the mother who shared the loneliness of her people.
Every December 18th, thousands of people from Oaxaca celebrate the festival of Solitude with processions and Zapotec songs.
