The Virgin of Zapopan
Zapopan, Jalisco
The patron Virgin of Jalisco. It was found by an indigenous on the mountain.
In 1539, a Franciscan friar left a small image of the Virgin in a Zapopan hermitage. The indigenous people venerated her, but when the Spaniards left, the image was lost.
Years later, an indigenous found her on the mountain, covered with land. He cleaned it and put it in the hermitage. Since then, the Virgin of Zapopan is the patron of Jalisco.
Cada 12 de octubre, millones de zapopanos celebran la fiesta con la «Danza de los Pochos», donde los hombres cargan a las mujeres en andas.
