A wooden statue of the Virgin cried 101 times.
In 1973, sister Agnes Sasagawa, a deaf nun from the convent of Akita, Japan, saw that a wooden statue of the Virgin Mary shed tears. The statue cried 101 times between 1973 and 1981.

In 1982, Sister Agnes suddenly recovered her ear. In 1984, the bishop of Niigata authorized the veneration. Cardinal Ratzinger (future Pope Benedict XVI) said that events should be taken seriously.
