Chinese Marian Miracles
The Miraculous Medal has been the source of numerous miracles in the history of the Church in China. From protection during persecutions to unexplained healing, the miracles of the Miraculous Medal are a testimony to the effectiveness of this devotion and the intercession of the Virgin Mary.
The Miraculous Medal during the pursuit of the Boxers
During the Boxers Rebellion (1900), the Miraculous Medal was a key survival factor for many Chinese Catholics. The faithful who carried the Miracle Medal with them attributed their protection to the intercession of the Virgin Mary.
In Hebei province, the survivors of the Boxers' persecution said that, during the attacks, they saw a bright light surrounding them when they showed the Miraculous Medal. This light, interpreted as the presence of the Virgin Mary, protected them from the attackers.
Healing attributed to the Miraculous Medal
The Chinese tradition contains numerous cures attributed to the Miraculous Medal. Among the best known are:
Healing typhoid fever: In 1902, a typhoid fever epidemic hit Hebei province. The faithful who carried the Miracle Medal reported a significantly higher survival rate than the rest of the population.
The healing of the wounds: During the Chinese Civil War (1945- 1949), many Catholic soldiers attributed their survival in battle to carrying the Miraculous Medal. The missionaries documented several cases of miraculous healing of war wounds.
Conversions attributed to the Miraculous Medal
The Miraculous Medal has been an instrument of many conversions in China. Many non-Christians who received a Miraculous Medal as a gift and began to do so experienced a profound spiritual transformation and converted to Catholicism.
The Lazarist missionaries in China found in the Miraculous Medal an effective instrument of evangelization. The simplicity of devotion and its depth made it a tool accessible to all.
The Miraculous Medal during the Cultural Revolution
During the Cultural Revolution (1966- 1976), the Miraculous Medal became a sign of spiritual resistance. The clandestine Catholics wore the medal hidden under their clothes, as a sign of their fidelity to faith and their confidence in the protection of the Virgin Mary.
Many faithful testified that the Miracle Medal gave them the strength to persevere in faith during the years of persecution. The medal was a source of comfort and peace in the midst of suffering.
