Miracles of the Holy Rosary in China

Chinese Marian Miracles

The Holy Rosary has been the source of numerous miracles in the history of the Church in China. From protection during persecutions to unexplained healing, the miracles of the rosary are a testimony to the effectiveness of this Marian prayer and the intercession of the Virgin Mary.

Rosary as protection during persecution

During the Boxers Rebellion (1900), rosary prayer was a key survival factor for many Chinese Catholics. The faithful who prayed the rosary and carried the rosary with them attributed their protection to the intercession of the Virgin Mary.

In Hebei province, the survivors of the Boxers' persecution said that, during the attacks, they saw a bright light surrounding them when they prayed the rosary. This light, interpreted as the presence of the Virgin Mary, protected them from the attackers.

Curations attributed to the rosary

The Chinese tradition contains numerous curations attributed to the prayer of the rosary. Among the best known are:

The healing of the plague: In 1910, a plague epidemic hit the province of Manchuria. The faithful who prayed the rosary reported a significantly higher survival rate than the rest of the population. The MEP missionaries documented several cases of miraculous healing attributed to the rosary prayer.

Healing typhoid fever: In 1920, a typhoid fever epidemic hit Hebei province. The faithful who carried the rosary with them and prayed it regularly reported a significantly higher survival rate.

Conversions attributed to the rosary

The rosary has been an instrument of many conversions in China. Many non-Christians who received a rosary as a gift and began to pray it experienced a profound spiritual transformation and converted to Catholicism.

The missionaries in China found in the rosary an effective instrument of evangelization. The simplicity of prayer and its depth made it a tool accessible to all, from the simplest to the most educated.

The Rosary during the Cultural Revolution

During the Cultural Revolution (1966- 1976), the prayer of the rosary became an act of spiritual resistance. The clandestine Catholics prayed the rosary in a low voice, hiding, keeping faith alive in the darkest moments.

Many faithful testified that the rosary gave them the strength to persevere in the faith during the years of persecution. The repetition of the Avemarias was a source of comfort and peace in the midst of suffering.

The rosary in contemporary China

At present, rosary prayer remains one of the most practiced devotions in China. The parishes regularly organize community prayers of the rosary, especially during the months of May and October. The Chinese faithful have developed their own ways of praying the rosary, adapting it to Chinese cultural sensitivity.
