Marian devotion
Our Lady of Yangon
Yangón, Myanmar
Burmese Catholics venerate the Virgin Mary in the ancient capital of the country.
In Yangon, the Cathedral of Santa Maria is the center of the Catholic faith in Myanmar. The Lazarist missionaries established devotion in the 19th century.
Faith under the dictatorship
Myanmar has suffered decades of military dictatorship. Catholics are a minority, but their faith is deep. The Virgin Mary is the mother who comforts them in times of repression.
Tradition tells that during the 2007 protests (the Azafrán Revolution), Catholics prayed the Rosary in their homes calling for the liberation of the country. The Virgin protected them from violence.
