The Virgin of Cuapa and reconciliation
Nicaragua
The Virgin of Cuapa is the symbol of national reconciliation.
After the civil war, Nicaragua needed reconciliation. The Virgin of Cuapa, who had called for peace during the war, became the symbol of reconciliation.
The Sandinistas and the contras, who had been enemies, met in the sanctuary of Cuapa to pray together. The Virgin had asked for peace to be built, and that is what they began to do.
Today, the Cuapa shrine is a meeting place between Nicaraguans of different political positions, united by faith in the Virgin.
