The Virgin of Carmen is the patron of Masaya, the city of the flowers.
Masaya, conocida como «la ciudad de las flores», tiene en la Virgen del Carmen a su protectora. La devoción llegó con los misioneros franciscanos en el siglo XVI.
The Masayans venerate the Virgin of Carmen as a protector of crafts and trade. Every July 16, the city is dressed in flowers to celebrate its party.
The tradition tells that the Virgin of Carmen protects the artisans of Masaya, who carve wood and weave textiles with techniques inherited from their ancestors.
