The Virgin of Carmen and Nicaraguan migrants
Miami, United States
Nicaraguans in exile carry the Virgin of Carmen as a memory.
Thousands of Nicaraguans have had to flee their country because of the persecution. In Miami, Houston and Los Angeles, Nicaraguan communities venerate the Virgin of Carmen.
Tradition tells that migrants carry a small image of the Virgin of Carmen in their bags. When they arrive at their new destination, the first thing they do is to seek a church to thank the Virgin.
In the Basilica of Our Lady of the Merced in Miami, Nicaraguans celebrate the feast of the Virgin of Carmen with the same passion as in León.
