In El Viejo, a small town in Nicaragua, the Immaculate Conception of El Viejo, the oldest advocation in Central America, is venerated. The image was brought by the Spaniards in the 16th century.
Faith in times of persecution
Nicaragua has suffered religious persecution under the government of Daniel Ortega. Catholics were persecuted and many priests were imprisoned or exiled. The Virgin Mary was the mother who comforted them in suffering.
Tradition tells that the Virgin of El Viejo protects Nicaraguan Catholics. The faithful pray the Rosary in their homes, knowing that the Virgin listens to them even if they cannot go to church.
