Our Lady of the Carmen de León
León, Nicaragua
The Virgin of Carmen is the patron of León and one of Nicaragua's oldest advocates.
The devotion to the Virgin of Carmen came to León with the merchant missionaries in the 16th century. The image was brought from Spain and became the center of the spiritual life of the city.
The lions venerate the Virgin of Carmen as the protector of the city. Every July 16, thousands of people participate in the procession that runs through the colonial streets of León.
