The Virgin of the Rosary is the patron of Estelí and a pilgrimage centre.
The devotion to the Rosary came to Estelí with the Dominican missionaries. The image of the Virgin of the Rosary was the center of the spiritual life of northern Nicaragua.
The Estelans venerate the Virgin of the Rosary as the protector of the city. Every 7 October, thousands of people celebrate the party with processions and songs.
Tradition tells that the Virgin of the Rosary protected Estelí during the civil war. The inhabitants prayed the Rosary and the city was preserved from destruction.
