Immaculate Conception of the Old One
El Viejo, Chinandega, Nicaragua
The oldest Virgin in Nicaragua. She was brought by colonizers in the 16th century.
In 1534, the merchants brought an image of the Immaculate Conception to El Viejo, the first city founded in Nicaragua. The image has survived earthquakes, wars and revolutions.
Tradition tells that the Virgin protected The Old One from a devastating earthquake. The inhabitants prayed to the image and the earthquake ceased. The image was intact between the rubble.
Pope John Paul II raised the church to a minor basilica in 1996. It is one of the oldest and most loved shrines in Central America.
