The Virgin of the Merced and the captives
Carazo, Nicaragua
The merchants released hundreds of captives thanks to the Virgin.
In the 17th century, Caribbean pirates attacked the Nicaraguan coast and abducted the inhabitants. The merchants, with the image of the Virgin of the Merced, were going to rescue them.
La tradición cuenta que la Virgen apareció a los piratas y les dijo: «Dejad en paz a mis hijos.» Los piratas, asustados, soltaron a los cautivos.
Today, in the church of the Merced in León, the image of the Virgin and the memory of those who were released are preserved.
