The orphans of war venerate the Virgin of the Merced as her mother.
During the civil war, many Nicaraguan children were orphaned. In the orphanages of Masaya, the Virgin of the Merced was the mother of all those children.
Las monjas mercedarias cuidaban de los huérfanos y les enseñaban a rezar ante la Virgen. Los niños la llamaban «Mamá Merced» y le contaban sus sueños y sus miedos.
Today, the adults who were orphaned in the war still go to the church of the Merced to thank the Virgin for having taken care of them.
