Marian devotion
Our Lady of Niamey
Niamey, Níger
The Nigerian Catholics venerate the Virgin Mary in the country's capital.
In Niamey, the capital of Niger, the Cathedral of Santa Maria is the center of the Catholic faith. The spiritual missionaries established devotion in the 19th century.
Faith in the desert
Niger is a country in the Sahara desert. Catholics are a very small minority, less than 1% of the population. The Virgin Mary is the mother who protects them in a predominantly Muslim country.
Tradition tells that the Virgin protects the Nigerian Catholics, who are a small but brave minority. The faithful pray the Rosary in their homes, knowing that the Virgin listens to them.
