Marian devotion
Marian shrines of Tunisia
Tunez
Tunisia houses a Marian heritage that ranges from the ruins of the 4th century Christian basilicas to the churches built during the French protectorate. Although the Catholic community is small today, the Tunisian Marian shrines bear witness to a faith that resisted conquests and disappearances.
The Cathedral of San Luis de Cartago
Built in 1890 on the top of Byrsa hill, the Catedral de San Luis was the seat of the Vicariate of Tunisia and after the Archdiocese of Cartago. Although dedicated to King Saint Louis of France (died in Tunisia in 1270 during the Eighth Crusade), he houses an important Marian chapel with an image of the Virgin. In 1964, following the agreement between Bourguiba and Paul VI, it was transferred to the Tunisian State and today it functions as a cultural space. However, the Catholic Mass is occasionally celebrated in it.
The Church of San Vicente de Paul (Tunisia)
Located in the centre of the Tunisian capital, the Church of San Vicente de Paul It is the main place of Catholic veneration in Tunisia. Built during the French protectorate (1883), it retains a Marian altarpiece and an image of the Virgin Mary that the faithful venerate. It is the most active parish of the Archdiocese of Tunisia.
La Basílica de Damous El Karita (Cartago)
The remains of the Basílica de Damous El Karita, one of the largest Christian churches in North Africa (IV- V century). The basilica had a central ship and two sides, with an annex baptistery. Although its Marian dedication has not been confirmed with certainty, tradition associates it with the Virgin Mary. The remains, including capitals and mosaics, are visible in the Archaeological Park of Cartago.
The church of Notre-Dame de Cartago
In the vicinity of the Cathedral of San Luis, the White Fathers built a church dedicated to Our Lady, with a Marian image that was the subject of pilgrimage during the protectorate. The current state is unknown.
The church of Santa Juana de Arco (Tunisia)
La Church of Santa Juana de Arco, in the Lafayette district of Tunisia, it was for decades a centre of Marian devotion. Built in a neo-Gothic style in the early 20th century, it preserves vitrals with scenes of Mary's life. It remains an active parish of the Tunisian Catholic community.
Marian churches in other cities
The Catholic presence in Tunisia was extended during the protectorate to many cities:
- Sfax: Church of Our Lady of Angelus.
- Sousse: church of Saint Augustine, with Marian chapel.
- Sidi Bou Said: small chapel in the picturesque coastal village.
- Tabarka: Church of the White Fathers.
North African Marian Mosaics
Tunisia's archaeological sites have revealed many Christian mosaics with Marian themes: crosses, pigeons, the monogram of Christ, and representations of the Virgin with the Child. These mosaics, dated between the 4th and 7th centuries, are testimony to the artistic wealth of the Church of Africa.
Prayer for the shrines of Tunisia
Our Lady, who in the ancient Carthage were venerated in basilicas of mosaics and marbles, look with love at the sanctuaries who still rise in Tunisian land. May the stones of Damous El Karita and the columns of St. Louis speak of your presence on this earth. May the faithful of Tunisia find in you, Mary, the comfort and hope of a faith that does not die. Amen.
