Oran, the second city of Algeria and a long-standing Mediterranean port, was a great center of Marian devotion during French colonization. Along with Our Lady of Santa Cruz, the city venerated other claims that are now part of the Christian memory of the Maghreb.
The Cathedral of Santa Maria de Oran
La Cathedral of Saint Mary (also known as the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart), built during the colonial period, was the seat of the diocese of Oran. Dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, he housed side chapels with Marian images. After the independence of Algeria (1962), the cathedral was confiscated and converted into a public library. Today is a cultural space known as Bibliothèca.
Our Lady of the Rosary of Oran
La The Rosary's Brotherhood de Oran was one of the most active in French Algeria. Every Sunday, the faithful gathered to pray the Rosary in the churches of the city. The devotion to the Rosary was maintained among the Spanish and French settlers of Oran, who constituted a vibrant Catholic community.
The Spanish community of Oran
Oran had an important community of Spanish origin, especially in the provinces of Almería and Murcia. The Spanish brought with them Marian devotions like the Virgin of Carmen y la Immaculate Conception. The Marian parties were held with processions that went through the streets of the city.
The Virgin of Health
In the region of Oran the Our Lady of Health, advocation of Spanish origin. The church of Our Lady of Health was a pilgrimage center where the faithful came to ask for the healing of diseases. The church still exists is not known.
Pray today
After Algeria's independence (1962), the Catholic community of Oran was drastically reduced. The diocese of Oran today maintains a witness presence with a few thousand faithful. The Basilica of Our Lady of Santa Cruz remains standing at the top of the mountain, though in a state of abandonment. The memory of the Oranese Marian devotion lives in the Algerian diaspora of France and Spain.
