Marian devotion
Our Lady of the Robledo of Constantine
Constantine, Algeria
Constantine, a millennial city suspended on a deep ravine, was during French colonization an important center of Marian devotion. The advocation of Our Lady of the Robledo recalls the presence of the Virgin in one of the most spectacular landscapes of the Maghreb.
Constantine: City of History
Constantina (ancient Cirta) is one of the oldest cities in Algeria, the capital of the kingdom of Numidia. Its strategic position on a 200-meter cliff on the Rhumel River made it unexpugnable. The city was important in the Roman, Vandala, Byzantine, Arabic and French times.
The colonial Marian devotion
During the French colonial period (1837- 1962), Constantine became a center of Catholic devotion. The French community and religious congregations built Marian churches and sanctuaries. The advocation of Our Lady of the Robledo It is linked to a Marian image that tradition places in the area of Robledo, a natural park on the outskirts of the city.
The Church of Our Lady of Victories
La Church of Our Lady of Victories was the main Catholic parish of Constantine during the colonial period. Built in a neo-Gothic style, it housed an important Marian altar and was the center of the celebrations of the Assumption and the Immaculate Conception. After independence, the church was confiscated and converted into a mosque.
The White Fathers in Constantine
Los White parents (Missionaries of Africa), founded by Monsignor Lavigerie in Algeria, had a presence in Constantine. The congregation promoted Marian devotion as a bridge between Christians and Muslims, following the spirit of its founder.
The Virgin of the Robledo and popular devotion
The advocation of the Virgin of Robledo is linked to the tradition of Marian presence in the natural spaces of Constantine. French settlers used to organize pilgrimages to the Robledo, a tree park where an image of the Virgin had been placed. The procession of August 15 was one of the city's most popular celebrations.
Constantine today
After Algeria's independence (1962), the Catholic community of Constantine disappeared almost completely. The churches were converted into mosques or public buildings. However, the memory of Marian devotion remains in the Algerian diaspora and in the diocesan archives.
Prayer to Our Lady of the Robledo
Oh, Mary, who in the Robledo of Constantine was venerated by the faithful who looked from the cliffs of the Rhumel, intercede through the land of Algeria. May the memory of Constantine's Marian devotion not be lost, and may your protection cover the few Christians who still live in this millennial city. Amen.
