Marian devotion
Our Lady of Tripoli: the Marian devotion of the Libyan capital
Tripoli, Libya
Marian devotion in Tripoli dates back to the early centuries of Christianity, when the Roman city of Oea was an episcopal see. The devotion to Our Lady of Tripoli has survived conquests, expulsions, and wars, remaining a symbol of the Christian presence in Libya.
Ancient origins
The city of Oea (future Tripoli), along with Leptis Magna and Sabratha, formed the Triples Roman (the three cities). The bishopades of these three cities have been active since the third century. The Marian devotion in the region is as old as the Christian presence itself, and the Fathers of the Church of Cyrene mention the veneration of Mary in the communities of North Africa.
The Italian cathedral of Tripoli
During the Italian colonization, the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart of Jesus (also known as Tripoli Cathedral) in the center of the old city, opened in 1928. Although dedicated to the Sacred Heart, it housed an important Marian chapel with a picture of the Immaculate Conception that was the object of great devotion. After Gaddafi's arrival in power (1969), the cathedral was confiscated and converted into a mosque.
The Church of Our Lady of the Angels
La Church of Our Lady of Angels, in the district of Dahra (Tripoli), it was for decades the main place of Catholic veneration in the Libyan capital. Built by the Franciscans in the 1930s, it maintained a Marian image venerated by the Italian community and later by the Filipino and African workers. The current state of the country is unknown after the conflicts of 2014-2014.
The Marian devotion of Libyan Muslims
As in other countries in North Africa, Maryam (Mary) has a prominent place in Libyan Islamic tradition. Libyan Muslim women occasionally visit abandoned Marian shrines, light candles and call for the intercession of the "Lady" (Sayyida). This popular devotion transcends religious borders.
Our Lady of Peace
In the Marian tradition of Libya we talk about the Virgin of Peacethe title that took special meaning during the years of civil war (2011-2014 and 2019-2020). The remaining Christians in Tripoli came to Mary with the intention of peace in the country.
Current situation
The Catholic presence in Tripoli is minimal today: a few thousand foreign workers (mostly Filipinos) attend Mass in cramped spaces. The old cathedral remains a mosque. Attempts to reclaim places of worship have been unsuccessful. However, Marian devotion persists underground.
Prayer to Our Lady of Tripoli
Oh, Our Lady of Tripoli, who you watched over the ancient Christian communities of the Tripolitaine, intercede through the land of Libya. May your maternal presence be the seed of peace where there is war, of hope where there is desolation, of faith where the Christian memory has been lost. It protects the few Christians who still live in Tripoli and may your light shine again over this millennial city. Amen.
