Marian devotion
The Apparition of Our Lady of Zeitoun (1968- 1971)
El Cairo, Egipto
Between 1968 and 1971, crowds of Christians and Muslims looked at the domes of the Coptic Church of Zeitoun a luminous figure of the Virgin Mary, in one of the most widely witnessed Marian apparitions of the 20th century.
Historical context
The church of Zeitoun, located in the Cairota district of the same name, was built in the early 20th century on a land where the Coptic tradition places a stage in the journey of the Sagrada Familia. In April 1968, Egypt was living a delicate time: the Six-Day War (June 1967) had left deep wounds and the country was experiencing an identity crisis. It was in that context of zozobra that the light manifestations began.
The first night: April 2, 1968
On the night of April 2, 1968, two mechanics working in front of the church saw a luminous figure on the major dome. They initially thought of a fire and alerted the parish priest. A crowd soon gathered, which for hours saw a woman in white, surrounded by light, floating over the domes. Some witnesses described doves of light that materialized and disappeared without following the laws of natural flight.
Witnesses and scope
The apparitions were repeated over three years, often variable: almost every night during the first few months, then more spaced. It is estimated that hundreds of thousands of people looked at the demonstrations. The witnesses included:
- The Coptic Orthodox Patriarch Cirilo VIwhich sent a commission of inquiry and subsequently recognized the authenticity of the apparitions.
- The then Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasserwho, according to testimonies, came personally to observe.
- Bishops of the Greek Catholic and Orthodox Coptic churches.
- Multitude of Muslims, who identified the figure with the Sayyida (Madam) mentioned in the Quran.
Official investigation
The ecclesiastical and civil authorities investigated the phenomenon:
- La patriarchal commission of the Orthodox Coptic Patriarchate concluded in 1968 that the apparitions were authentic.
- La Egyptian police He thoroughly investigated, reviewed the roofs, looked for lights, mirrors, projectors and any apparatus that could produce the illusion. He didn't find anything.
- The intervention of aircraft, helicopters, balloons or artificial light seals was excluded.
- Professional and amateur photographers captured images showing luminous figures in various forms: a woman standing, a kneeling figure, doves of light, iridescent clouds.
Description of the apparition
The witnesses consistently described a luminous female figure of more size than natural, dressed in white or grey pearl clothes, sometimes with a blue blanket. The apparition was manifested in various ways:
- Standing on the central or lateral dome of the church.
- Kneel on the dome in prayer attitude.
- accompanied by doves of light that materialized and faded.
- Surrounded by a glow that illuminated the surroundings.
Acute theological significance
For the Coptic Church, Zeitoun confirms the protective presence of the Theotokos (Mother of God) over Egypt, a land that welcomed the Holy Family. The apparition was interpreted as a message of comfort after the 1967 military defeat and as a call to unity between Christians. The fact that Muslims also saw the figure reinforced the interreligious character of the event.
Ecclesiastical recognition
The Coptic Orthodox Patriarch Cirilo VI It officially recognized the apparitions on 4 May 1968, stating:
It is one of the few Marian apparitions formally recognized by an Apostolic Church in the 20th century.
The pigeons of light
One of the most unusual elements was the apparition of light pigeons that materialized in full flight and disappeared without a trace. The physicists who studied the phenomenon found no natural explanation: the "doves" did not follow parabolic trajectories, appeared and disappeared instantly and emit their own light.
Impact on Egyptian society
Zeitoun's apparitions had a profound social impact:
- Thousands of Muslims approached Christianity or deepened their respect for the Christian faith.
- An explanade was built in front of the church to welcome the crowds.
- Nasser's government ordered the protection of the place.
- The church became one of the main pilgrimage destinations of the Middle East.
The sanctuary today
The Coptic church of Zeitoun remains an important place of worship and pilgrimage. Every 2 April, thousands of faithful commemorate the anniversary of the first apparition. The temple retains photographic images of the apparitions and an environment of deep Marian devotion.
Prayer to Our Lady of Zeitoun
Oh, Our Lady, Mother of Light, who you appeared on the dome of Zeitoun comforting your afflicted people, intercede before your Son Jesus Christ for all who suffer persecution and discomfort. As you took the Child God in your lap in the flight to Egypt, welcome today those who seek refuge in your maternal protection. May your light, which shone over Cairo, always illuminate the hearts of the Christians of Egypt and the whole world. Amen.
